Discoms in Delhi advise against flyng kites with metal-coated strings

In an advisory, the Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) has advised people to avoid kite flying near overhead power lines and other power installations.

Metal-coated kite string may cause electrocution and can also lead to tripping if it gets entangled in overhead power lines, the discom said.

Flying kites is popular, especially around Independence Day in the national capital.

According to estimates, tripping of one 33/66 KV overhead line can disrupt power supply to the homes of over 10,000 residents of an area, while tripping of a single 11 KV line can disrupt supply in over 2,500 residents.

It can take around 15 minutes to two hours to deal with the damage to power cables caused by flying kites, said a TPDDL spokesperson.

In their advisory, BSES discoms pointed out that disrupting power supply and damaging power equipment is punishable under the Electricity and the Delhi Police Acts.

The Operations and Maintenance teams at BSES are on high alert in preparation for Independence Day to handle any contingencies relating to kite flying.

“Kite flying is an integral part of the Independence Day celebrations in Delhi. Sometimes this otherwise innocent and fun activity can be hazardous, even fatal due to use of metal coated kite string”, said a spokesperson of the discom.

The discoms also appealed to the parents and other elders to guide children and youngsters not to enter prohibited electrical installations to retrieve kites and adhere to other safety measures like using cotton thread for flying kite.
