New Delhi , Jun 1 (PTI) The Delhi government has roped in the irrigation and flood control (I&FC) department to improve the flow of Yamuna water, officials said on Monday.
For the past several days, the city has been facing severe water shortage, affecting supply in several parts of the capital.
“The supply has improved slightly since last week. We are using I&FC department machines to make channels in the pond near Wazirabad so that maximum water reaches our pumps,” a senior DJB officer said.
According to officials, the equipment is being used to dig through accumulated silt at the Wazirabad water treatment plant (WTP).
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday said the Haryana government has assured maintaining 1,000 cusecs of water supply through the Munak Canal.
According to officials, the current water supply stands around 912 million gallons per day (MGD) against the target of 1,002 MGD.
Delhi is dependent on neighbouring states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh for raw water supply.
DJB’s overall average production capacity ranges between 990 and 1,000 MGD of drinking water, including supply via tubewells.
The chief minister had also said efforts are being made to provide relief to the people through more than 980 tankers undertaking nearly 6,000 trips daily.
Yamuna water level at the Wazirabad barrage remains critically low — around 669.5 feet on Monday — against the required normal of 674.5 feet.
DJB’s two major water treatment plants — Wazirabad and Chandrawal — have reduced production due to low raw water supply, triggering water shortage in several areas.
As per current estimates, overall water production has been reduced by approximately 70-100 MGD due to shrinking pondage (capacity) of raw water at Wazirabad.
Areas including South Extension, Greater Kailash, Jahangirpuri, Moolchand, Majnu Ka Tila, Kashmere Gate ISBT, NDMC localities, ITO, Defence Colony, CGO Complex, Rajghat, WHO, Ramleela Ground, Delhi Gate and adjoining areas may be affected as the crisis deepens.
Civil Lines, Hindu Rao Hospital, Kamla Nagar, Shakti Nagar, Karol Bagh, Pahar Ganj and and parts of NDMC and cantonment areas may also be affected in coming days. The DJB has not given any timeline on when the situation might improve.
