BARE ESSENTIAL: Sita lives in a makeshift tent after her shelter was demolished by the MCD
Homeless individuals in the national capital are being relocated to temporary tents established by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board as part of the city government’s winter initiative, officials said on Wednesday.
A joint apex advisory committee meeting was convened in the initial week of November with the aim of rescuing homeless individuals and offering them shelter. According to a DUSIB official speaking to PTI, the committee comprises key officials from the Delhi Jal Board, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and Delhi Police.
“The implementation of Delhi government’s winter action plan for the homeless has commenced, and teams are actively engaged in transferring them to the temporary tents,” an official said.
Reportedly, 110 tents have already been erected across the city to accommodate the homeless, with 15 rescue teams deployed on the ground to disseminate information about the available facilities.
“We anticipate setting up an additional 30 to 40 tents soon. Our process involves conducting surveys to determine suitable locations for tent placements,” the official explained.
These teams identify clusters of homeless individuals and coordinate with the control room to dispatch volunteers who assist in relocating them to the temporary tents.
Furthermore, medical teams are conducting visits to the temporary shelters twice a week.
“The homeless residents are receiving food and tea, a service that we extend throughout the year. We continuously monitor and evaluate our ongoing efforts,” the DUSIB official said. (With inputs from PTI)
