The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi, warning of rain and thunderstorms likely later in the day. The alert advises residents to stay aware of potentially disruptive weather conditions.

Delhi woke up to a minimum temperature of 28.2°C—slightly above normal—and relative humidity at 79 per cent at 8.30 am. The IMD has forecast a generally cloudy sky with light to moderate showers, thunderstorms, and lightning by evening. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 28°C.

Air quality in the capital was recorded in the “satisfactory” range with an AQI of 99, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The CPCB classifies an AQI of 51–100 as “satisfactory,” while 0–50 is considered “good.”

Weather conditions are becoming increasingly favourable for the advance of the southwest monsoon into more parts of Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh. The IMD and private forecaster Skymet both expect the monsoon to reach Delhi by June 24—well ahead of the usual June 30 arrival date. If it does arrive on June 24, it would be the earliest onset since 2013, when Delhi saw monsoon rains on June 16.

Skymet also noted on social media that humidity levels are rising with easterly winds blowing over the region, and predicted light showers today followed by more widespread rain through the week.

So far, Delhi has seen three rainy days this month, with rainfall exceeding 2.4 mm. The city has already received 89 mm of rain in June—well above the average of 43.3 mm for the month.

Last year, Delhi saw an exceptionally wet June, recording 243.4 mm of rainfall against a monthly normal of 74.1 mm. The monsoon had reached the capital on June 28, bringing intense thunderstorms and heavy rain. On that day alone, Safdarjung, the city’s main weather station, recorded 228.1 mm of rain, according to IMD data.
