A man has been convicted by a Delhi court for attempting to murder his wife by shooting at her with a country-made pistol almost five years ago.
The case was presided over by Additional Sessions Judge Vipin Kharb, who heard the charges against Ravinder Singh. The incident occurred on September 4, 2018, when Singh allegedly shot his wife, Poonam, with the intention to kill her.
According to the prosecution’s account, Poonam had been married to Singh for 13 years. On the day of the incident, an argument ensued between them. When Poonam implored Singh not to quarrel, emphasizing the well-being of their children, he left the room momentarily only to return with a gun and fire at her.
In a recent judgment delivered earlier this month, ASJ Kharb stated, “The prosecution has convincingly proven that the accused is guilty of committing an offence under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC and an offence under the Arms Act. Consequently, Ravinder Singh is convicted of these offences.” The court has scheduled the sentencing arguments for August 10.
The court found Poonam’s testimony to be reliable and credible as it remained consistent throughout, supported by medical evidence, as well as the statements of her daughter and brother.
The medical report revealed that the bullet struck Poonam’s stomach and exited through the right gluteal region. The court emphasized that Singh’s actions, bringing the pistol from another room and firing at his wife, demonstrated his deliberate intent to cause harm. The court further opined that it was evident from Singh’s actions that he intended to cause his wife’s death.
Additionally, the prosecution successfully established that Singh was in possession of a country-made pistol with two live cartridges and one empty cartridge, for which he lacked a license, making him liable for punishment under the Arms Act.
The case was registered against Singh by the Uttam Nagar police station.
