The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) announced on Thursday that all 700 markets in Delhi will remain closed on February 5 for polling day.

CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal urged traders to comply with the directives issued by the Election Commission and the Labour Department.

He mentioned that while most shops will stay shut, some retail sector shopkeepers may open their stores in the evening after casting their votes.

However, Goyal stressed that if any shop or factory operates on polling day, employees must be given a paid leave, and no salary deductions should be made.

The 70-member Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled for February 5, with the results set to be announced on February 8.

In a statement, the CTI directed all market associations and business establishments to ensure shops remain closed on polling day, adding that industrial areas will also observe a holiday.

CTI General Secretary Gurmeet Arora highlighted that the Delhi government has already issued an order mandating all business establishments, including shops, hotels, restaurants, resorts, and industrial units, to provide leave to employees without any salary deductions.

Additionally, the Labour Department has enforced an order under Section 135B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, ensuring that every employee engaged in any profession, trade, or industrial activity is entitled to a holiday to cast their vote.

The statement further mentioned that employees engaged in emergency services have been advised to report to work only after voting.
