MCD councillors on Friday flagged gaps in waste segregation and collection in their wards and sought tighter monitoring of bulk waste generators as the civic body discussed implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
At a special meeting chaired by Deputy Mayor Monika Pant, councillors sought stronger registration and compliance mechanisms for bulk waste generators, regular awareness drives and improvements in waste collection, according to a statement issued by the deputy mayor’s office.
According to an official statement, the meeting also focused on four-way segregation of waste at source, with the civic body’s chief engineer briefing councillors on provisions of the new rules and the need to keep different categories of waste generated by households, institutions, markets and other establishments separate.
Pant said merely creating awareness about the rules would not be enough unless they were implemented on the ground.
“Effective solid waste management requires coordination between awareness of the rules, their implementation at the ground level, and active participation of citizens,” she said, according to the statement.
Councillors also raised issues specific to their respective wards and suggested measures to improve segregation, collection and monitoring of bulk waste generators, besides seeking better safety and welfare measures for sanitation workers.
Pant said ward-level campaigns, demonstrations and interaction with residents, RWAs, market associations and institutions should be used to improve segregation practices.
“Proper segregation of waste at source can make the entire system of waste collection, transportation, processing and recycling more efficient,” she said.
The deputy mayor directed officials to act on the suggestions made by councillors and stressed greater coordination between the civic body and other stakeholders, the statement said.
