With Delhi heading towards winter, when air pollution typically worsens, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Tuesday rolled out 12 multi-purpose vehicles equipped with anti-smog guns and water sprinklers to strengthen road-cleaning operations, officials said
According to an official statement, each vehicle has a 7,000-litre water tank and is equipped with a jetting system to clear blockages in small covered drains and culverts, as well as washing guns for cleaning public toilets and other surfaces.
Mayor Pravesh Wahi flagged off the vehicles at the MCD headquarters at Civic Centre. Each vehicle costs Rs 35.06 lakh, taking the total expenditure for the 12 vehicles to about Rs 4.21 crore, the statement read.
“These 12 multi-purpose vehicles would strengthen efforts to control airborne dust particles, keep roads clean and improve civic services,” Wahi said.

Apart from dust suppression, the vehicles can be used for road washing, drain cleaning and other sanitation-related work, allowing the civic body to use the same machinery for multiple purposes.
Wahi said the MCD was adopting modern machinery to control dust pollution and strengthen sanitation arrangements in the capital.
The vehicles will be operated under an operation and maintenance model. Third-party inspection and quality checks through IIT Delhi have also been provided for, according to the civic body.
Each vehicle has an estimated useful life of 15 years, the MCD said.
