A man, sought in connection with a murder case and on the run, was arrested following a brief exchange of gunfire near Signature Bridge early Thursday, police said.
Umar, 24, hailing from Chauhan Banger, sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg during the police confrontation, authorities said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) Joy Tirkey mentioned that Seelampur Police Station received a tip-off indicating Umar’s presence in the Khadar area on Thursday.
“A trap was set, and at approximately 7:15 am, Umar appeared riding a motorcycle. When signaled to halt, he opened fire on the police team. In response, the police returned fire, injuring Umar in his right leg,” Tirkey said.
He further added that Umar was apprehended at the scene, subsequently treated at Jag Pravesh Hospital, and later discharged.
Tirkey confirmed the recovery of a 7.65 mm pistol from Umar’s possession.
“He discharged two rounds, with two more bullets left in the magazine. The police fired one shot, striking him in the leg. There were no injuries among the police personnel,” the DCP said.
Umar is facing charges of attempted murder and resisting police action, Tirkey added. (With inputs from PTI)
