Old Delhi’s Charti Lal Goel park serves a stroll through Mughal heritage

Recently, a new ‘Heritage Park’ opened up in north Delhi, attracting visitors who are looking to get away from the chaos and hustle of the old city. The park is named after Charti Lal Goel, who was the former deputy mayor of the unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the first speaker of the Delhi legislative assembly.

As you take the road from ITO to Kashmere Gate, you will see the park on the path leading up to the Red Fort, close to Meena Bazar on Heritage Road. The park has come up as a first in the area where the markets have always taken most of its space, leaving hardly any scope for a community park until now.

A grand Mughal style darwaza at the entrance

After entering through the beautifully lit Mughal-inspired darwaza (gate), a centrally located  Baradari (Mughal-era pavilion with 12 doors) is in the line of vision. Decorated with a brightly-lit chandelier at the centre, it illuminates the entire structure for its visitors, who are seen hovering around it as they click selfies and photographs throughout the evening.

The crowd strolls through the garden area with Jama Masjid in the background

The park also includes a small performance area built like a mini amphitheater. With the Jama Masjid in the background, a wide range of flowers in the gardens, and seating benches that resemble the Jantar Mantar in shape, the park has introduced elements that are a first for any of the parks in the capital.

Despite its closeness to the Dariba Kalan, Chandni Chowk and the huge trail of food outlets at Matia Mahal, the park has emerged as a respite for families and youngsters who want to get away from the hustle-bustle of Old Delhi.
