S B K Singh, Director General of Home Guards, has been given additional charge as Commissioner of Delhi Police. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued an order on Thursday confirming his appointment, effective from August 1, following the completion of Sanjay Arora’s tenure.

A 1988-batch Indian Police Service officer from the AGMUT cadre, Singh brings with him a distinguished career spanning over 36 years, marked by leadership roles in Delhi and in northeastern states including Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh.

An alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, Singh joined the IPS after completing his graduation in 1986. He later pursued an MBA with a specialisation in Human Resource Management, complementing his strong field experience with strategic and technological insight.

In Delhi Police, Singh has served in several key roles — from Additional DCP (South) to DCP (Northeast and Central), Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), and later Special Commissioner across crucial domains such as Intelligence, Security, Law and Order, and Technology.

As Special CP (Law and Order), he introduced Public Facilitation Desks in police stations and oversaw major law enforcement operations across 89 police stations in seven districts. He also played a pivotal role in managing security arrangements for high-profile events, including the 2015 Republic Day celebrations attended by then US President Barack Obama and the Indo-Africa Forum Summit.

His tenure as Director General of Police in Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh was marked by a series of public-facing reforms — including all-women police stations, tourist police units, mobile safety applications, online complaint portals, and robust anti-narcotics strategies along the Myanmar border.

Singh’s commitment to modernising police services includes developing the ‘Lost Report’ mobile app and web-based police clearance systems in Delhi, as well as encouraging the use of social media for public engagement in the northeastern states.

He has also served more than seven years with the Cabinet Secretariat (RAW), in India and overseas.

Honoured with the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, the Police Medal for Meritorious Service, and a Silver Medal for National e-Governance, Singh is regarded as a forward-thinking officer who blends technology with grassroots policing. He also writes a blog titled Spiritual Policeman, where he shares reflections on policing and public service.

Singh will now lead Delhi Police at a time when the force continues to grapple with challenges of urban law enforcement, public safety, and technological transformation.
