In Delhi, traders have announced plans to challenge the city’s civic body in court regarding the implementation of a single-tax system.

Vikram Badhwar, Secretary of the New Delhi Traders’ Association (NDTA), stated that Connaught Place traders, in a recent meeting, decided to file a petition urging the court to adopt a uniform tax structure.

This decision was prompted by the New Delhi Municipal Corporation’s (NDMC) sealing of various establishments, including hotels, restaurants, bars, showrooms, and shops, due to outstanding tax payments. While the NDMC has since reopened some of these businesses, others remain closed.

Badhwar emphasised the need for a straightforward and transparent tax system, as opposed to the current complex method. He also expressed concerns about potential economic repercussions if the entire Connaught Place were to shut down for a day.

In a meeting with NDMC Vice-Chairman Satish Upadhyay, traders conveyed their dissatisfaction with the inconsistent property tax assessment methods used by the NDMC. Upadhyay assured them that he would discuss the issue with the chairman.

Atul Bhargava, President of the New Delhi Traders, highlighted the frustration among traders who feel that the NDMC’s assessment of property tax lacks uniformity and transparency. He emphasized the importance of a uniform tax policy for Delhi to promote peaceful business operations. He also advocated for a single Unit of Measurement and Assessment (UMA) method, rather than the current practice of calculating tax based on assumed rent.

In summary, Delhi traders are seeking a more equitable and transparent tax system, as well as a unified approach to property tax assessment. They are prepared to escalate their protest if their concerns are not addressed.
