Tughlakabad demolition drive continues as SC denies stay

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to put a stop to a demolition drive to clear encroachment in the Tughlakabad area of south Delhi.

However, the court agreed to hear the case concerning rehabilitation and served notices to the Central government, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), and the Delhi Development Authority on the plea filed by some residents.

The bench, consisting of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice M M Sundresh, stated that the issue of rehabilitation would be taken up as the first item of the next day’s hearing.

Colin Gonsalves, a senior advocate representing the residents, argued that the Delhi government had offered alternative rehabilitation for the affected residents, and requested the restoration of the status quo.

The Supreme Court agreed to hear the case on Tuesday. (With inputs from PTI)
