Delhi’s Development Minister Gopal Rai announced on Sunday that traders affected by the recent fire at Azadpur Mandi have been relocated temporarily until the damaged tin sheds are restored.

During his visit to Azadpur Mandi, the largest wholesale vegetable market in Asia, where a fire erupted on September 29, Rai stated that he has directed the repair work to be completed within 45 days.

A significant fire occurred at Tomato Mandi on Friday, requiring the efforts of 11 fire tenders to extinguish the blaze. The fire was successfully brought under control by 6:30 pm.

“To ensure the traders’ business continuity, they have been shifted to an alternate tin shed. I have instructed that the repair work for the affected tin shed be completed within 45 days,” mentioned the minister during a press briefing.

Addressing concerns about fire tenders facing difficulties in reaching the fire site due to traffic congestion, Rai had mentioned on Friday that the possibility of developing a fire control system was being explored.

Azadpur Mandi stands as Asia’s largest wholesale fruit and vegetable market, playing a pivotal role in the city’s food supply chain. This bustling market is a crucial hub where farmers, traders, and retailers converge to buy and sell an extensive variety of fresh produce.

The market, situated in North Delhi, has a rich history dating back to the 1970s when it was established to streamline the distribution of fruits and vegetables in the region. Over the years, Azadpur Mandi has evolved into a complex ecosystem, serving as a primary source of fruits and vegetables for not just Delhi but also neighboring states.

The market operates 24/7, reflecting the continuous flow of goods and the dynamic nature of the agricultural sector.
