Delhi University to hold students’ union election on September 22

The Delhi University Students’ Union elections are scheduled for September 22, as announced by the university on Thursday.

This election marks a return after a hiatus of four years, with the last students’ union elections held in 2019. The disruptions caused by COVID-19 prevented the elections in 2020 and 2021, while academic calendar challenges thwarted the process in 2022.

Nomination papers for candidates can be submitted until September 12, followed by their scrutiny and the subsequent publication of the list of nominated contenders, according to a circular issued by Delhi University.

The final list of candidates will be finalized by September 13, after the withdrawal of nominations.

The voting schedule will be divided between day and evening classes, with day class students casting their votes from 8.30 am to 1 pm, and evening class students participating from 3 pm to 7.30 pm, as outlined in the circular.

The specifics regarding the counting of votes, including date, time, and venue, will be communicated at a later date.

The Delhi University Students’ Union serves as the primary representative body for numerous colleges and faculties within the university. Each college has its own students’ union as well, and these elections occur on an annual basis.

The university-wide students’ body elections are synchronized with the college-level polls. Roughly 2,500 students vie for nearly 500 positions during these elections. A substantial number of students, approximately one lakh, participate in the voting process, which often serves as a stepping stone for aspiring politicians.

Various students’ groups welcomed the university’s announcement of the election date. The ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) expressed its approval, stating that holding students’ union elections after a four-year gap would provide positive representation for the Delhi University student community.
