Swift action by the family and doctors at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital saved the hand of a 20-year-old woman after it was severed in a machinery accident.

Nikita Kumar, 20, accidentally placed her hand in a foam-cutting machine while delivering lunch to her brothers at their factory. The incident, which occurred in New Delhi, severed her right hand at the mid-palm level. She was rushed to BLK-Max Hospital within 30 minutes, where she received immediate medical attention.

The Plastic Surgery team, led by Dr Lokesh Kumar, Principal Director and HOD of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, performed a 12-hour surgery to reattach the hand. “The prompt arrival at the hospital and the quick action of the medical team were critical in the success of this complex surgery,” Dr Kumar said.

Following the surgery, Nikita is undergoing intensive physiotherapy to restore function to her hand. “Nikita is on the path to recovery and is expected to regain full use of her hand,” said Dr Avtar Singh Bath, Senior Director of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery. Early signs indicate promising nerve regeneration, with the patient already experiencing sensation in her fingers.

Her father, Shailender Singh, expressed gratitude for the medical care and said, “My daughter is much better now. She can handle 40% of her daily tasks on her own. We are thankful to the doctors for their support and kindness”.
