Despite the unseasonal rains and the advent of the monsoon, Bougainvillea’s bloom in Delhi has been quite remarkable. Its vibrant colours and delicate petals have painted the national capital in its own hues. Ideally, its blooming season is between December and May.

While Central Delhi is known for such aesthetic floral sights, parts of South Delhi such as Nehru Place, Siri Fort and Jahapannah Forest also boast of its presence. Its colours captivate the hearts of nature enthusiasts and casual observers alike.

The Bougainvillea garden at Buddha Jayanti Park in the Central Reserve Forest area has been a home for these beautiful flowers.

Named after the French explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville, this tropical gem has become a beloved symbol of beauty and resilience.

One of the most remarkable features of Bougainvillaea is its colourful bracts, which surround its small, inconspicuous flowers. These bracts come in a stunning array of hues, including vibrant pinks, purples, reds, oranges, and whites. The combination of the bright bracts and the contrasting green foliage creates a breathtaking display of natural beauty.

Bougainvillea is cherished for being a low-maintenance hobby, making it an ideal choice for both experienced and novice gardeners. It can thrive well in an arid city like Delhi. Although it can tolerate some shade, it prefers unobstructed sunlight.

Bougainvillea is native to South America, specifically Brazil, Peru, and Argentina. Its discovery in the late 18th century sparked interest among botanists and adventurers, leading to its eventual spread across continents. Today, Bougainvillaea thrives in various regions with warm climates, including Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America. Its adaptability and ability to flourish in diverse environments has made it a favourite among gardeners worldwide.
