Indo-Korean connect
What: To commemorate via art the spirit of the March 1st 1919 movement, when the first public demonstration took place in Korea against the Japanese occupation, here’s a Korea-India exchange exhibition. Titled ‘100th Anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement: One Shiny Day’, the show is co-organised by the National Gallery of Modern Art along with Daegu Art Museum and hosted by Korean Cultural Centre. The exhibition also celebrates 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi. Keywords to understand the exhibition are ‘memory’, ‘record’ and ‘commemoration’ but in the exhibition, there is no clear distinction between these three words. Rather, attention is paid to how they are connected to serve as artistic drivers.
When: August 14 – September 29
Where: National Gallery of Modern Art
Tribute to superstar
What: In a tribute to KL Saigal, Pierrot’s Troupe is all set to perform a Hindi musical, the only play on the life and times of the legendary singer and the first superstar of Indian cinema. It’s not merely a musical tribute, it’s a nostalgic trip — an absorbing, entertaining portrayal of Saigal as Sita in Jammu, Saigal as Salesman in Delhi, Saigal as Struggler in Kolkata and as Superstar in Bombay. The play features Yashraj Malik, who not only sings like Saigal, but also looks like him. Written and directed by M Sayeed Alam, the play has 87 shows to its credit.
When: August 25 (7:30 pm)
Where: Shri Ram Centre, Mandi House
Tunes and tabla
