2 BY 2: An adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Comedy of Errors’

The Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts, in its latest event, will host the play 2BY2, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors, which is about two identical twins with identical names.

Designed and directed by Salim Arif, the play will take place on May 18 and 19 at 7 pm.

In Gulzar’s adaptation of 2BY 2, Bachelor Ashok and Bahadur land in the city of Married Ashok and Bahadur for one day to create confusion that is more than their families, the jeweller, police inspector and town folk can handle, said Salim Arif.

About the play

Raj Tilak a rich merchant has identical twins whom he calls Ashok. One day Raj Tilak is on his way with his wife and kids, in the midway Raj Tilak found another pair of identical twins whom he adopts and names Bahadur. Once again both the twins are named same.

The destiny plays its game and an unfortunate accident divides the family. The family gets divided like this, both the parents have one kid out of each pair, so the mother has one Ashok and one Bahadur and the father has one Ashok and one Bahadur. One Ashok is married to Sudha and Bahadur is married to Prema. And the other Ashok, is a bachelor and Bahadur also a bachelor, is a Bhaang addict.

The destiny again plays it game when bachelor team of Ashok and Bahadur land in the city of married Ashok and Bahadur, Now there are two Ashoks and two Bahadurs in the same city. This is more than their families, the Jeweller, the Taxi Driver and the Inspector can handle, leading to hilarious situations with many events and confusions going around.

“Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors is a classic that has the notion of ‘mistaken identity ‘as its fulcrum or root cause.
