To commemorate India’s 79th Independence Day, a special dance drama titled Azadi Ke Mahanayak will be staged at the Satyagraha Mandap, Gandhi Darshan, near Rajghat in New Delhi, on August 12 at 6:00 PM. The event is being organised by Urvashi Dance Music Art and Cultural Society and Tapasya Foundation, in association with the Ministry of Culture and Gandhi Darshan.

Directed by Dr Rekha Mehra, with choreography by Ajay Bhatt and assistant Abhishek, the production takes audiences on an evocative journey from the revolt of 1857 to the independence of 1947. It seeks to revive the memory of India’s valiant freedom fighters—Mangal Pandey, Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Subhas Chandra Bose, Chandrashekhar Azad, and many others—whose courage and sacrifice paved the way for a free India.

“Today, as we witness the transformation of India into a global, progressive nation, we must not forget the era of colonial rule and the immense cost at which our freedom was won,” said Dr Mehra. “Azadi Ke Mahanayak is our tribute to the heroes who planted the seeds of development with their blood and resilience.”

The performance aims to honour not only well-known icons of the freedom struggle but also the countless unsung heroes whose names may have faded from memory. Through powerful choreography and emotive storytelling, the production encourages the audience to reflect on the sacrifices made and the collective pain endured in the quest for independence.
