Bhilwara Sur Sangam: A two-day classical music extravaganza

The much-awaited Bhilwara Sur Sangam, an annual celebration of Indian classical music, will return to the national capital on April 2. The 12th edition of this musical festival, organised by the LNJ Bhilwara Group, promises to be an enchanting two-day event that showcases the grandeur of India’s rich cultural and musical heritage. This year’s performances will take place at the Kamani Auditorium, starting at 6:30 PM on both days.

The festival will be headlined by renowned sitar virtuoso Purbayan Chatterjee, whose mastery of the instrument is celebrated worldwide. Joining him will be the father-son duo from the Banaras Gharana, Pandit Sajan Mishra and Swaransh Mishra, who are known for their exceptional prowess in Hindustani classical vocal music. Together, they will bring the deep traditions of classical vocal to the stage, offering an unforgettable performance.

In addition to the celebrated performances by Chatterjee and the Mishra duo, the festival will also feature Pandit Prattyush Banerjee, a revered sarod exponent, who will showcase his command over the instrument. Renowned vocalist Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar will bring his soulful renditions to the stage, making for a diverse and enriching classical music experience.

Over the years, Bhilwara Sur Sangam has become a prestigious platform for some of India’s most iconic classical musicians. Past editions have seen performances by musical legends such as Pandit Jasraj, Ustad Rashid Khan, Ustad Shujaat Khan, Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, and Sushri Kaushiki Chakraborty, to name a few. The festival continues to uphold its tradition of showcasing some of the finest maestros of Indian classical music.

Ravi Jhunjhunwala, Chairman of the LNJ Bhilwara Group, expressed his thoughts on the festival, saying, “India boasts a wealth of cultural and musical heritage, which is exceptionally diverse and has evolved over centuries.
