Discover the hidden gems of Nizamuddin Basti

Walk leader Bonny Kusari will host a heritage walk in Nizamuddin Basti on August 13 where visitors can explore the rich cultural heritage of the area. During the guided trail walk, the hidden gems and stories of the historic neighborhood including the famous dargah of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya and the tombs of famous Sufi saints, will be discovered.

The walk will be of approximately 2.5-3 hours and will be conducted in Hindi.

Here are the monuments that will be covered: Nizamuddin Chillah (Khanqah), Gurudwara Damdama Sahib, Dargah Patte Waali, Urs Mahal/Chausath Khamba, Tomb of Mirza Ghalib, Adgah Khan’s Tomb, Amir Khusro Dargah, Nizamuddin Dargah and Nizamuddin Baoli.

The area, which has been inhabited for more than 700 years, is named after Sufi Saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya. The settlement around the tomb of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, who settled in a Delhi village Ghiyaspur located on the tributary of River Yamuna, is known as the Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti.

It comprises the Humayun’s Tomb, Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti and Sunder Nursery, Batashewala Tomb-Garden Complex, the tomb of courtier poet Khan I Khanan ‘Rahim’, and the Mughal-period caravanserai of Azimganj Serai.

The Nizamuddin Revival Project on the holistic urban revitalisation of the historic Nizamuddin Basti community, had won the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation 2021. The project involves the meticulous restoration of over 20 historic monuments clustered around the 14th-century mausoleum of the revered Sufi saint, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya.
