KNMA opens two exhibitions exploring abstraction, ecology

The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) is showcasing two exhibitions in New Delhi exploring abstraction, ecological change and the relationship between humans and the natural world. Both exhibitions opened on September 9 and will remain on view until December 22.

In-Rhythm: Bice Lazzari and Nasreen Mohamedi, curated by Andrea Anastasio and Roobina Karode and assisted by Neha ‘Zooni’ Tickoo, brings together works by Italian artist Bice Lazzari and Indian artist Nasreen Mohamedi. Although the two artists never met, they developed similar approaches to line, geometry, repetition and restraint in their practices.

The exhibition traces their movement towards increasingly abstract forms, with grids, lines and subtle variations in spacing becoming central to their artistic language. Their works employ repetition and geometric forms while retaining elements of movement and emotion.

The second exhibition, Inheritors of Earth, curated by Premjish Achari, focuses on plant life and its place in ecological, social and cultural histories. It brings together paintings, photographs, drawings, films and installations engaging with forests, mangroves, plantation crops and urban trees.

The exhibition explores themes including growth and decay, migration, rootedness, labour, memory and ecological change. Rather than treating plants merely as subjects or background elements, the participating artists consider them as living entities with their own histories and forms of agency.

Together, the two exhibitions offer contrasting ways of looking at the world — In-Rhythm through the precision of abstract art and Inheritors of Earth through a focus on plant life and ecological relationships.

KNMA’s Learning & Outreach programme is also organising workshops, artist-led sessions and nature-based activities for families, schools and young people alongside the exhibitions.
