Oeuvre of an artist

The Bikaner House will host an exhibition on artist Roopinder Kaur Sandhu’s paintings that has touched many hearts with her colour, shapes. It will showcase the sensitivity of her brush throughout the course of her eighty-three years.

Born in the late 1930s into a social group where girls were typically raised as debutantes rather than nurtured for their abilities and intelligence, Sandhu developed a profound understanding for the need to speak for women in a man’s society, particularly for the needs of young girls.

Her family will contribute a percentage of the revenues to the Caring for the Girl Child Foundation and to her local Gurdwara for the construction of a school.

The exhibition will see oils on canvas, pictures, and writing by the artist that relate the her fondest memories from her unique life. It will showcase oeuvre of her work into seasons: winter, spring, summer, and fall.

It will be a tribute to the artist’s life told via the concept of how the changing seasons represent changes in our lives.

Her artwork reflects her love of nature and the changing seasons. Her eyes can see beauty even in the midst of a wildfire’s devastation or the depth of a sunset that drinks in the brightness of the sky.

Landscapes are dynamic, restless, and living, changing with the seasons. Her paintings depict a world seen through the eyes of a diamond uncovered behind a layer of seemingly conventional looks.

Roop, now 83, lives in what may best be characterised as a living museum, with a collection that many reviewers and art enthusiasts admire. As gorgeous as the collection is, Roop’s gaze is drawn most tenderly to her own works and the images of her family that adorn the walls.

When: 11am to 7pm, December 15 to 21
