A special musical evening marking the 100th birth anniversary of legendary tabla maestro Pandit Chatur Lal is set to take place at Safdarjung Tomb on April 16. Organised by the Pandit Chatur Lal Memorial Society in collaboration with Delhi Tourism, the event promises a confluence of Indian classical and devotional music in one of the capital’s most iconic heritage settings.
The evening aims to celebrate the life and legacy of the pioneering percussionist, who played a key role in taking Indian classical rhythm to global audiences. A distinguished exponent of the Delhi gharana, Pandit Chatur Lal is remembered for his tonal clarity, rhythmic mastery and early cross-cultural collaborations with Western musicians.
The highlight of the programme will be a performance by Bhajan Samrat Anup Jalota, whose renditions have shaped devotional music for generations. The event will also feature “Brahmaand”, a contemporary musical presentation by percussionist Pranshu Chatur Lal, blending tradition with modern expression.
The ensemble for the evening includes sitar by Mohd Saqib Khan, vocals by Shuheb Hasan, flute by Atul Shankar and keyboards by Monis Ali, creating a layered and immersive musical experience.
Organisers describe the event as not just a tribute but a celebration of an enduring musical legacy. Family members of the maestro noted that the centenary is an opportunity to reflect on his lasting influence and to carry forward his artistic vision.
Set against the historic backdrop of Safdarjung Tomb, the event seeks to bring together artistes, audiences and admirers in a shared moment of remembrance and celebration, where heritage and music resonate in harmony.
The Pandit Chatur Lal Memorial Society, which has been active for nearly five decades, continues to promote Indian classical music through concerts, collaborations and cultural initiatives.
