Latitude 28 presents Sut te Saah: Stories Woven in Phulkari, an exhibition curated by Shreya Sharma and presented by Bhavna Kakar, on view from December 27 to January 26 at the gallery’s Defence Colony space. The exhibition brings together more than 40 rare pre-Partition Phulkaris and Baghs drawn from the collections of Amit Hansraj and Brig. Surinder & Shyama Kakar.

The exhibition traces the life cycle of Punjabi women through textile traditions, exploring themes of birth, marriage, faith, domestic life and remembrance. Organised across three sections—Sankraman (Transition), Vishvaas ate Katha (Belief and Narrative), and Rihaish (Dwelling and Everyday Life)—the show presents Phulkari as both a cultural artefact and a deeply personal form of expression.

Through Chope, Vari-da-Bagh, Sainchi, Baghs and Thirma Phulkaris, the exhibition highlights how embroidery functioned as a visual language through which women recorded emotion, ritual and memory. These textiles, created in the Majha, Doaba and Malwa regions of undivided Punjab, reflect lived experiences passed down through generations rather than formal histories.

Curated as a narrative rather than a typological display, Sut te Saah foregrounds oral traditions and Punjabi boliyan that once accompanied the making of these textiles. The exhibition positions Phulkari as a living archive—stitched with belief, labour and quiet resilience—revealing how women inscribed their lives into cloth.

Presented by Bhavna Kakar, the exhibition also draws from personal histories, reflecting on inheritance, memory and continuity through textiles preserved within families over decades.
