Ambedkar Jayanti: Parliament Street turns blue for Babasaheb

As the sun began blazing on Friday, ‘Jai Bhim’ reverberated in the Parliament street in celebration of the 132nd birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar. There were blue flags wavering under the azure sky and slogans against the oppressive caste system pervaded the air- a passionate and thumping show of love for Babasaheb, the country’s greatest social reformer.

The street was immersed in blue, the colour of Dalit resistance, as anti-caste songs from loudspeakers created an environment of joy and pride. Visitors could be spotted with different Ambedkarite accessories – cards, posters, scarves, badges – greeting each other with wide smiles and open arms. There were food stalls distributing sweets, water, and meals to mark the day and share the happiness.

The significance of the event can be summarised by the presence of various books written by Ambedkar and other anti-caste leaders. The copies of the Indian Constitution were also popular among the visitors, as they discussed its importance and relevance.

“Ambedkar means knowledge. The books are the most important elements of the celebrations. Without the knowledge that Ambedkar gave us, we are incomplete,” said Aman Mandhotiya, a visitor.

Another important thing in the festival was the presence of Buddha. There were posters featuring him along with Ambedkar, his idols, and other accessories. A stage was particularly set for various cultural programs that presented many dance and other cultural performances.

Visitors, who came from all over Delhi, said that Ambedkar Jayanti is a festival that they wait for every year. Many told Patriot that it is the only festival they celebrate.

Here’s how the day went:
