The journey from an abandoned church to global screens

Recently screened at the Austrian Embassy New Delhi, Aeon Oz continues to captivate audiences with its spellbinding mix of dance, music, and light. The extraordinary journey of this cinematic marvel needs to be retraced—from its genesis in an abandoned church to its blossoming across continents.

What began as a simple idea for a light installation in the ruins of a church took an unexpected turn, evolving over seven years into what Kaspar calls a Gesamtkunstwerk—a total work of art. Initially, the film was never meant to be a film; it was a performance, an ephemeral spectacle designed to be experienced live.

India’s role in shaping Aeon Oz

India played a crucial role in this transformation. “Its diversity, its spirituality—all of it was meant to help shape the first steps and lay the foundation for this visual artwork. And that is exactly what happened.”

Then, as fate would have it, the pandemic struck. It was a period of light and shadow, of unexpected pauses and introspection. However, instead of hindering the project, the delay gave Aeon Oz the time it needed to mature. The film expanded, both in scope and depth. “And it brought us another gift: Colombia—a new continent, a pearl of nature, enriching the project with yet another dimension.”

Europe: The final creative laboratory

Europe, in contrast, became the laboratory where all these elements converged, where ideas were refined, and the vision found its final form. When Aeon Oz was finally ready, it was no longer just a film—it was an experience waiting to be shared.

Kaspar describes Aeon Oz as “a vibrating web of sound, movement, light, and nature.” He explains, “It invites you to be touched, to marvel, and to sense the hidden depths behind the familiar. Like a quiet call from another reality, it opens spaces for transformation, the echo of ancient rituals, and the magic of pure perception.”

Beyond categorisation: A cinematic dreamscape

Indeed, the film resists classification. It is not merely a dance film, nor just a music-driven visual essay. Instead, it pulsates with an energy of its own—one that refuses to be confined by conventional narrative structures. Aeon Oz unfolds like a dream, where movement and rhythm speak louder than words, where the play of light on a dancer’s body carries the weight of an entire philosophy.

Cultural bridges: Austria, India, and beyond

Kaspar’s journey with Aeon Oz has been filled with meaningful encounters. One such moment came when Michael Pal from the Austrian Cultural Forum in Delhi saw the film in Auroville and extended an invitation to screen it in New Delhi. Kaspar expresses his gratitude: “It means a lot to share it with a new audience. I deeply appreciate this opportunity and am delighted that everyone who attended had the chance to experience my work.”

Michael Pal, Director, the Austrian Cultural Forum, Austrian Embassy New Delhi, sees the film as an important cultural collaboration between India and Austria.

“The film, which combines striking imagery of nature from around the world with a mesmerising dance performance, explores the spiritual and philosophical dimensions of Auroville and beyond. It was well received by an engaged audience and sparked a lively discussion on the significance of spirituality and dignity in today’s world. The event marked another step in strengthening cultural exchange between Austria and India,” Pal rejoices.

The surprise element: A film that is felt, not just watched

What makes Aeon Oz truly special is its ability to surprise. Audiences often arrive with no idea of what to expect, only to find themselves immersed in an entirely new mode of storytelling. Kaspar reflects on this reaction with a quiet sense of fulfilment.

“I often heard people say how refreshing it was to experience storytelling in a different way. But above all, they spoke of the positive energy that radiates through the beauty of it all.”
