“I consider it an accidental turn of events and myself an accidental actor,” says Faisal Malik, who shot to fame after his stirring performance as Prahlad Cha in the web series Panchayat.

“I came to Mumbai with the intention of becoming an actor, but that didn’t take off. I was doing odd jobs to survive. Still, I wanted to do something in the film industry, so I opened a production company in 2011, and things haven’t been the same since,” Malik continued.

The 43-year-old actor has worked as an assistant director, promo producer, reality show producer, line producer, and co-producer of various shows.

“I was part of the production team for the film Gangs of Wasseypur. The actor originally cast as police inspector Gopal Singh suddenly quit the film for unknown reasons, and I was unexpectedly offered the role. It was quite a shock for me,” said Malik.

“It was an honour to be part of this film,” Malik expressed, reflecting on his satisfaction with being involved in a project with such a large star cast.

He has also appeared in films like Fraud Saiyaan, Ariyippu, Mast Mein Rehne Ka, Dedh Bigha Zameen, and Pad Gaye Pange.

He recounted his memorable experience working on the TV show Yudh, where he had the opportunity to collaborate with Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan.

“I visited his home with Anurag KashyapHaving a meal with him was a dream come true. It’s everyone’s dream to work with and meet him,” Malik said excitedly.

Praising filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, Malik described him as a significant figure in cinema. “He has done so much for the industry, teaching many and remaining devoted to his craft.”

LIFE AFTER ‘PANCHAYAT’

“We never anticipated the show becoming such a hit. It gave me a new public identity,” Malik exclaimed.

“Panchayat has completely changed my life. It has opened new doors for me, and I’m now receiving more opportunities.”

Malik added, “The director and writer of the series, Deepak Mishra, approached me with the role. Initially, I was hesitant and unsure about taking it on, but his encouragement convinced me.”

Actor Faisal Malik

“I am grateful to the creators and will strive to continue delivering my best work.”

“Producing content for OTT platforms requires a lot of hard work, as it needs to be developed in parts. Additionally, these platforms have raised audiences’ expectations by offering content in various languages and formats.”

SECRET TO SUCCESS

“I rely solely on hard work. Initially, breaking into the industry was tough, but the Internet has made it easier to connect with people,” Malik said.

He doesn’t believe that having a ‘godfather’ in the industry guarantees success. “Acting studies and patience are crucial.”

Despite not having a formal theatre background, Malik acknowledged the influence of his theatre friends. “I haven’t done theatre myself, but I have friends who are theatre actors. Their experiences have been invaluable.”

While discussing how the industry can produce more quality work, Malik stressed the need for more government-supported film festivals. “They are essential for the industry and help filmmakers produce quality work. I actively participate in and support these festivals.”

THE DELHI CONNECTION

“I have a long-standing connection with Delhi. My elder brother lives here, and I was also on the production team of the film Delhi 6.”

“I’m also very fond of Delhi’s food,” added Malik, who originally hails from Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh.
