Playback singers aren’t in the spotlight anymore: Shaan

Bollywood singer Shaan has expressed concern that the prominence of playback singers has diminished in recent years.

“I have noticed significant changes in the Bollywood music landscape. The role of playback singers has waned, largely due to the rise of independent music and digital platforms. While these changes have created new opportunities for artists, they have also altered the traditional dynamics of the industry,” he shared.

At 52, Shaan reflected on his own transition from pop music to playback singing in Bollywood, describing it as a natural progression. “My success in the pop genre opened doors to film music, where my voice found a new audience. This shift allowed me to diversify my work and collaborate with a range of composers and artists,” he explained.

Connecting with the music

When preparing for a new song, Shaan emphasised the importance of forging a strong emotional connection with both the lyrics and the melody. “I believe understanding the emotion behind the song is essential for delivering a performance that resonates with listeners. This holistic approach ensures that each rendition is heartfelt and authentic,” he said.

Reflecting on how his relationship with music has evolved, Shaan said that earlier in his career, music was about passion and establishing his identity. “Today, music has evolved into a powerful medium for expression and connection,” he added. He appreciates its ability to “evoke emotions, unite people, and promote mental well-being”.

A musical legacy continues

Shaan’s sons, Soham and Shubh, have shown a strong inclination towards music. “I fully support their passion, encouraging them to carve out their own unique paths rather than simply following in my footsteps,” he said. He added that it is important to him to nurture their individuality while offering guidance based on his own experiences in the industry.

The Tere Naina singer is known for his soulful playback singing and has worked on numerous iconic tracks for films such as Dil Chahta Hai (2001), Lagaan (2001), Dil Vil Pyar Vyar (2002), Jism (2003), Jab We Met (2007), Om Shanti Om(2007), Saawariya (2007), and 3 Idiots (2009), among others.

Last year, Shaan introduced his son Maahi at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. In 2024, he also brought three young pop stars to Cannes, marking a significant milestone in their musical journeys.

Guided by empathy

As a father, Shaan places high importance on open communication and encourages his children to pursue their passions with confidence. “I believe in guiding them with empathy and understanding, drawing on my life lessons to support their personal and professional growth,” he said.

Shaan also shares a special bond with Delhi, where he often visits for performances and events. “I am in love with the city’s vibrant culture and enthusiastic audiences, who have always welcomed me with warmth. The food in Delhi is also a story, and I enjoy it every time I am here,” he added.

Remembering KK and honouring Kishore Kumar

The singer fondly remembered his close friendship with the late KK. “We were like brothers, often visiting each other’s homes. His untimely loss was deeply personal to me. He left us too early,” Shaan said.

He also holds Kishore Kumar in the highest regard, citing him as a major influence on his musical style. “Kishore Kumar was a versatile and emotive singer, and his legacy continues to inspire artists across generations. I too have followed his style of singing and learned a great deal from him,” he concluded.
