Delhi lost to Gujarat by 52 runs in the pre-quarterfinals of the Men’s U-25 State A Trophy to crash out of the tournament.

Batting first, Gujarat scored 319/7 in 50 overs. Openers Aarya Desai (100) and wicketkeeper-batsman Urvil Patel (111) scored centuries, adding 197 for the first wicket in 33.5 overs.

Valuable contributions from the batsmen lower down the order, including a 10-ball 20 from Hemang Patel, helped Gujarat cross 300 in their 50 overs.

Delhi pace bowler Harshit Rana picked 5/69 in 10 overs while skipper Mayank Rawat took 2/51 in his 10 overs.

Delhi suffered an early jitter as they lost one of their openers early. But a 64-run second wicket partnership between opener Sanat Sangwan (66) and Vaibhav Kandpal (34) brought them back on track.

After Kandpal’s dismissal, Sangwan and Ayush Badoni (58) added 40 runs for the third wicket.

However, the rising required run-rate kept the pressure on Delhi and they could not keep pace with it.

Skipper Rawat made 20 off 22 balls while Sumit Mathur kept the fight going with 42 off 35 deliveries.

With the total on 233/6 in the 43rd over, the pressure was building and Mathur was dismissed in trying to go for the runs.

That was the end of Delhi’s resistance as they meandered to 267 before getting dismissed in 49.4 overs. Aarya Desai took 4/47 in his 10 overs while Yash Doshi took 4/54 in his 10 overs to return as Gujarat’s standout bowlers.

Gujarat now play Saurashtra in the quarter-finals. In the other quarter-finals, Mumbai square up with Madhya Pradesh, Bengal will be up against Railways and Himachal Pradesh against Punjab. All the matches will be played on Tuesday, December 6, in Rajkot.
