As expected, and mentioned by chief selector Ajit Agarkar last month, India’s 15-member World Cup squad, named by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday, comprised players picked for the ongoing Asia Cup with only pace bowler Prasidh Krishna and batsman Tilak Varma left out.

India had picked 17 players, plus reserve wicketkeeper Sanju Samson, for the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka.

While Krishna and Varma lost their spots in the India squad for the World Cup, batsman KL Rahul, who is recovering from a niggle and hasn’t played any game in the Asia Cup so far, as well as all-rounder Shardul Thakur retained their spots in the squad.

The Rohit Sharma-led boys play their first match in Chennai, against Australia on October 8. They then play Afghanistan on October 11 in Delhi before facing off with arch-rivals Pakistan in Ahmedabad on October 14.

India squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya (Vice-Captain), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav.
