WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature that lets users generate AI-powered profile photos. According to WABetaInfo, the feature allows users to create personalised and unique group profile pictures using AI. The feature has been rolled out to select beta testers.
A screenshot shared by WABetaInfo shows that some beta users have been able to try out the feature. However, WhatsApp has restricted its use to group icons, meaning users cannot create AI-generated profile photos for their personal accounts. Users can describe the desired image through a prompt, and AI will generate a customised group profile picture based on their preferences, personality, or mood. Theme-based options, such as futuristic tech or fantasy, may also be available.

Interestingly, the report mentions that the feature has appeared on the stable version of WhatsApp for Android, even for users not enrolled in the beta programme. This suggests that a broader rollout could be on the horizon. However, there is no confirmation on when the feature will be available for iOS.
In related news, WhatsApp recently introduced voice message transcripts in India. The feature generates text transcripts using on-device processing. While Hindi is not listed as an official transcript language, the feature is still providing text for voice notes recorded in Hindi.
