On 15 July, the renowned actor and filmmaker Pratap Pothen was found dead in his Chennai apartment, leaving the cinema industry in disbelief and mourning. Pothen had turned 70 in April this year. The actor was well-known for his roles in Moodupani (1980), Varumayin Niram Sivappu (1980), Nenjathai Killathe (1980), and Panneer Pushpangal (1981). Best known for his remarkable acting and charismatic on-screen presence, he has appeared in over 100 Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu films.
Apart from acting, Pratap Pothen served the industry as a director and producer as well. His directorial debut Meendum Oru Kaathal Kathai (1985), a Tamil film about a mentally-challenged couple, received the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a Director. In the movie Vettri Vizhaa, Prathap and Kamal Haasan collaborated in an age when over-the-top performances and innovations were not popular. It was the first time a Tamil movie had utilized steadicam.
