A Bengaluru-based couple has filed a police complaint claiming that jewellery valued at approximately Rs 30 lakh and Rs 30,000 in cash were stolen from their check-in baggage during transit through Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.

The alleged theft occurred on the morning of April 26 at Terminal 1 of IGI Airport. The complainants, Bhagirath Singh Rajpurohit and his wife, discovered the valuables were missing only after arriving at their home in Bengaluru.

“About 29–30 tolas of gold jewellery worth around Rs 30 lakh were stolen from our checked-in suitcase,” Rajpurohit told news agency PTI. He added that Rs 30,000 in cash, stored in three pouches, was also missing. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered with the Delhi Police’s airport unit.

Rajpurohit, a banker, said he and his wife were returning from a wedding in Rajasthan and had boarded a flight from Delhi to Bengaluru after checking in their luggage at around 7:20 AM. The flight departed at 11:30 am and landed in Bengaluru around 2 PM.

According to the couple, the stolen items were packed in a steel box placed inside a trolley suitcase, which was secured with both a number lock and a small physical lock. Upon inspection, they found the locks intact but noticed a cut mark inside a fold of the suitcase, suggesting a possible breach.

The missing valuables include gold earrings, bangles, anklets, and an armlet. The couple also reported the loss of a bank passbook and an Aadhaar card.

“We strongly suspect that airline or airport staff are involved. This was all the gold my wife owned, much of it crafted in her ancestral village,” said Rajpurohit. “We urge the authorities to take swift action and help us recover our belongings.”

A senior police officer confirmed that CCTV footage from the airport is being examined and that multiple teams have been assigned to investigate the incident.

In a concerning twist, Rajpurohit said a similar theft occurred the same day involving his father, who was travelling from Delhi to Dibrugarh on a separate flight. A gold chain from his father’s baggage was also allegedly stolen.
