A police constable was injured in an exchange of fire between a police team and armed criminals in the Tilak Nagar area of outer Delhi during a late-night encounter, an official said on Friday.
The incident took place on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday when a police team raided a hideout of suspects linked to an armed robbery case registered at Sultanpuri police station. The accused had allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint, stealing his mobile phone and cash, a senior police officer said.
Acting on a tip-off, the special staff tracked the suspects to their hideout and launched a raid after confirming their presence. As the team moved in around midnight, the suspects attempted to flee.
Head Constable Vikas and Constable Sandeep chased the two suspects for nearly 400 metres when one of them opened fire. The police retaliated, but Constable Sandeep sustained bullet injuries in his abdomen and left hand. He was rushed to the hospital, where he is reported to be stable and undergoing treatment.

The police managed to apprehend the two suspects and recovered two loaded country-made pistols from them. Legal proceedings are underway, and further investigation is ongoing, the officer added.
