The Delhi Police on Tuesday stopped a cremation in west Delhi’s Hari Nagar and took the woman’s body into custody after a PCR caller alleged that she had been killed by her family and was being taken for last rites, officials said.

According to the police, the call was received at the Hari Nagar police station around 2 pm, prompting immediate deployment of a team to verify the allegations.

“On reaching the spot, the police intercepted the family members and took possession of the body of the woman,” a senior police officer said.

The body was subsequently shifted to a mortuary for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death, the police said.

Preliminary inquiry suggests that the family had initiated preparations for the last rites when the PCR call was made, raising suspicion about the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death, the officer said.

Police are questioning the family members of the deceased to establish the sequence of events leading to her death.

“We are examining all angles, including the possibility of foul play,” the officer said.

The identity and age of the deceased are yet to be officially disclosed.

According to sources, the PCR caller had alleged that the woman was killed by her family, following which swift action was taken to prevent the disposal of the body without legal procedures.

The police said further legal action will be taken based on the findings.
