In a recent incident, a man was apprehended by the police in south Delhi’s Greater Kailash area for his alleged involvement in attempting to extort Rs 2 crore from a local builder.
The individual, identified as Bhupender, aged 41, had recently undergone a bypass surgery and had been burdened with debt for the past three years. In dire need of funds to settle his medical bills, he resorted to targeting the builder, according to the authorities.
On May 10, the builder lodged a complaint with the police, reporting that he had received a death threat on his mobile phone. The accompanying text message demanded a payment of Rs 2 crore to be made by 4 pm. Subsequently, around 5:05 pm, another message was sent to the builder, indicating that his failure to respond to the initial message would hold him accountable for the ensuing consequences.
Following the complaint, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chandan Chowdhary initiated an investigation into the matter. The police discovered that the mobile number used to send the threatening messages to the victim had been turned off. Utilising technical analysis, law enforcement managed to trace the accused to the Mehrauli area and successfully apprehended him in connection with the case.
During the arrest, the authorities recovered both the SIM card and the mobile phone that had been employed in the commission of the crime. The accused, Bhupender, is now facing charges related to extortion, and further legal action will be taken as the investigation proceeds, said the police.(With inputs from PTI)
