Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday announced that over 3,500 kilometres of roads across the national capital have been cleaned as part of a sweeping cleanliness campaign covering all 12 zones of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

The ongoing drive, aimed at improving sanitation and public hygiene, has also seen the issuance of over 11,000 challans and the removal of an estimated 19,892 metric tonnes of silt from drains across the city.

“The cleanliness drive will continue,” Gupta said in an official statement. “The goal is not just a one-time clean-up, but the establishment of a regular, robust system that ensures every street, neighbourhood, and market in Delhi remains clean, organised, and pollution-free.”

According to officials, the Rohini zone recorded the highest level of cleaning activity, followed by the Najafgarh, Karol Bagh, and South zones. Large-scale desilting of MCD drains was a central part of the effort.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the role of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, which, as of May 21, had cleared over 13.72 lakh metric tonnes of silt from 27 major drains. The department has been instructed to complete the remaining desilting work by May 31.

Gupta also reviewed the city’s progress in addressing poorly lit and unsafe areas. “To eliminate dark spots, 4,140 streetlights were repaired and 285 new ones installed, especially in areas lacking any previous lighting infrastructure,” the statement noted.

In a parallel initiative to improve urban aesthetics, authorities have removed 37,628 illegal posters and 8,399 banners from public walls, poles, and hoardings.

The comprehensive campaign is being seen as a step towards making Delhi cleaner, safer, and more liveable in the run-up to the monsoon season.
