Acid attack: Technical evidence reveals that the acid was purchased from Flipkart

Delhi Police issued a notice to Flipkart after discovering that the acid used to attack the 17-year-old girl in west Delhi was purchased from the e-commerce company, officials said on Thursday.

Flipkart did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Two masked men threw acid on a girl in southwest Delhi’s Mohan Garden locality on December 14, leaving the girl in a critical condition in hospital.

As outrage over the incident grew, many questioned why there was still access to acid in marketplaces despite ban.

The girl is currently being treated at Safdarjung Hospital’s Burns ICU.

Three people – prime accused Sachin Arora and his two friends Harshit Aggarwal (19) and Virender Singh (22) – have been arrested.

“We have issued a notice to Flipkart seeking details about the order placed by Arora,” said a senior police officer.

Sagar Preet Hooda, the special commissioner of police for law and order, claimed on Wednesday that the acid used in the attack was purchased from an online retailer, and that the primary suspect Sachin Arora made the payment using an electronic wallet.

According to a statement from the police, technological proof established that the acid was purchased via Flipkart.

The Delhi Commission for Women had earlier in the day sent notices to Amazon and Flipkart regarding the sale of acid on such websites.

During questioning, it came to light that Arora and the victim had been close friends up until September. They fell out and this led the accused to attack her, Hooda said, adding that Arora lived in the girl’s neighbourhood.
