Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Saturday inaugurated an advanced DNA examination facility for sexual assault and POCSO cases at Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Rohini.

According to an official, the facility is equipped with machinery that can analyse 24 samples simultaneously and provide an analytical result in 24 hours, as opposed to the previous 72 hours.

Additional 93 employees, whose hiring was just approved by the Lt Governor, will also work there.

The FSL gets between 2,500 to 3,000 cases each year involving murder, attempted murder, sexual assault, POCSO, natural disaster tragedies, and unidentified bodies. According to the official, the new technology will make it possible to complete biological, serological, and DNA typing examinations much more quickly, preventing delays in court proceedings.

The LG repeated his directives for the prompt and accurate handling of matters referred to the FSL when interacting with officials on the occasion.

The official noted that since his last visit to FSL Rohini on 29 June, 2022, when he gave instructions for expedited case disposition and reporting, there had been a 9% increase in such disposition and reporting.

Saxena further emphasised the necessity to handle the rising number of sexual assault cases and POCSO Act cases while putting equal emphasis on altering societal and behavioural norms and maintaining proactive and extra attentive enforcement.

According to the official, the facility, known as the Advanced DNA Examination Facility for Sexual Assault and POCSO Cases, is outfitted with the newest technology, including an automated DNA extraction system and a differential wash extraction system with advanced technology.

The LG emphasised the necessity of setting up technology-enabled systems that are free of human interaction and interface to the greatest extent possible while highlighting the need for complete integrity and transparency in forensic examinations.

He also emphasised the need for careful, scientific sample collection and preservation in order to obtain reliable results.

Saxena ordered that appropriate training be given to such employees on a periodic basis and continuously because the majority of the samples are collected by police officers, the source added.
