AIIMS Delhi to launch app for eye patients in an effort upgrade treatment, care

Eye patients from across the nation will be able to consult doctors at the facility through the app and get their advice. It will also help to track and continually monitor the patients who are waiting for the surgery.

“Covid has also made us realise that you have to approach people in a different manner because it may be difficult to approach physically at all times, especially those living in far-off places”, Dr JS Titiyal, chief of the centre, stated.

Through the application, doctors can interact directly with the patients. The app will also be using the camera, through which patients can share photos of their eyes and demonstrate their issues and symptoms. Doctors can diagnose them, and if the patients are registered with AIIMS, admission and surgery can be scheduled at the centre.

Titiyal explained that patients can also be called in on priority based on their disease progression. Moreover, the app will also aid in tracking patients who have undergone transplantation.

After a transplant surgery, follow-up becomes strenuous, the doctor pointed out.

“If somebody develops a rejection of a transplant, it has to be taken care of within a few days. If the patient comes after one or two weeks, you cannot reverse the rejection. If such a patient is tracked, he or she can be rushed to a nearby hospital so that their graft can be saved”, says Dr Titiyal

Under this initiative, different hospitals having professionals trained to carry out transplantation or take care of post-transplant patients will be connected.

The app is expected to be functional in six months.
