Delhi: Discoms issue kite-flying advisory before Independence Day

Delhi: As Independence Day and Rakshabandhan approach, Delhi’s discoms have issued an advisory urging residents to avoid using metal-coated manjha for kite flying, according to an official statement released on Tuesday.

The two electricity distribution companies, BSES and Tata Power, have advised consumers against using metal-coated manjha, which can conduct electricity, for kite flying.

“As Delhi gears up to celebrate Independence Day, the sky becomes a canvas for colourful kites—a tradition beloved by many. However, this festive activity can become dangerous, even fatal, when metal-coated manjha, a strong conductor of electricity, is used,” BSES stated in their official announcement.

“Each year, numerous cases of power disruptions and equipment damage occur due to metal-coated manjha. It is important to note that interrupting the power supply and causing damage to power equipment are offences punishable under the Electricity Act and the Delhi Police Act,” the BSES further explained.

Tata Power has similarly advised consumers against using metal-coated thread.

They stated, “We urge customers to use kite strings made of cotton or other natural fibres instead of metal-coated thread, in compliance with government regulations, and to be cautious of the electrical network.”

Additionally, the discom is organizing special awareness sessions in various government and private schools across Delhi to educate students about the dangers of flying kites with metal-coated thread and how to handle such situations, the statement added. (With inputs from PTI)
