Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Monday reviewed campus security, particularly the safety of girl students, in a meeting with heads of academic institutions in the national capital.

Sandhu said in a post on X that he directed authorities to strengthen multi-agency coordination, covering enhanced police patrolling, elimination of dark spots, CCTV integration along approach roads, improved last-mile transport connectivity and comprehensive safety audits of student accommodations.

“The safety and security of our students is non-negotiable,” the Lieutenant Governor (LG) asserted.

Vice-Chancellors and directors of Delhi government universities, senior officials of the Delhi Police, the Public Works Department, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and the transport department attended the meeting.

“We must ensure that every young person — especially our daughters — can pursue education in Delhi with confidence, dignity and a sense of security. A safe, vibrant and dignified environment for our youth is foundational to our vision of a Viksit Dilli,” Sandhu said in the post.

The LG has held a series of meetings with senior officials from various agencies and issued several directives to ensure students’ safety.

This comes in the wake of a gang-rape case involving a 17-year-old girl that occurred in a park in Kalkaji, as well as the collapse of a paying guest accommodation building in the Satya Niketan area. Police have arrested three individuals in connection with the gang-rape case.

The building near the Delhi University’s South Campus collapsed on September 6 while repair work was underway. Five students were among the seven people who died in the collapse, while several others were injured.
