A 39-year-old man sustained severe burn injuries in a fire that reportedly broke out due to an electric scooter being charged in the parking area of a house in south Delhi’s Aya Nagar, officials said on Sunday.

The Delhi Fire Services received a call about the incident on Saturday, following which two fire tenders were dispatched to H-Block in Aya Nagar to extinguish the blaze.

The injured man, identified as Virender Tiwari, is believed to have suffered nearly 50 per cent burn injuries. He was promptly taken to Safdarjung Hospital, where he remains in critical condition but is reported to be out of danger. Two scooters were also destroyed in the fire.

According to police, preliminary findings suggest the fire originated from an electric scooter that was plugged in for charging on the ground floor of the house.

At the time of the incident, Tiwari, a resident of G-Block in the same locality, was visiting his friend and house owner Avdesh Pandey. Both were seated in a room on the ground floor when the fire erupted.

As the flames spread, Pandey managed to escape to the first floor. However, Tiwari became trapped amid thick smoke and was unable to follow. He eventually forced open the main gate and exited the house, but not before sustaining serious burns.

Other residents of the house managed to escape by climbing onto the roof of a neighbouring building, a senior police officer said.

Tiwari was taken to hospital by Pandey with the help of local residents.

Authorities have launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and to verify the sequence of events.
