The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has approved a project worth Rs 6.08 crore to replace seven non-functional escalators in busy subways in Connaught Place, many of which have developed recurring mechanical faults after years of heavy use, officials said on Tuesday.
The project covers escalators at KG Marg, Statesman House, Gopaldas and Super Bazaar subways.
The civic body said seven of the 22 public escalators installed during the redevelopment of Connaught Place around the 2010 Commonwealth Games have reached a stage where repeated repairs are no longer feasible.
The seven escalators proposed for replacement include one each at KG Marg (No. 1954), Statesman House (No. 1969) and Gopaldas (No. 1999), besides four at Super Bazaar (Nos. 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1968).
The administrative approval and expenditure sanction of Rs 6.08 includes replacement of drive units, controllers, trusses, steps and handrail systems, along with upgraded safety mechanisms suitable for outdoor conditions.

The project also includes a one-year warranty after installation and commissioning, followed by a five-year Comprehensive Annual Maintenance Contract (CAMC).
The work will be awarded through open e-tendering and is scheduled to be completed within 34 weeks, including design, supply, installation, safety testing and commissioning, officials said.
