Two sharpshooters allegedly involved in the murder of a gangster’s relative were arrested following a gunfight with the Delhi Police’s Crime Branch near Sector 34 in Rohini early Friday.
The accused, identified as Sombir alias Chinu from Hisar (Haryana) and Vijay from Bhaskar Colony (Chandigarh), are said to be members of the Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu gang. They had been on the run after the broad-daylight killing of Deepak, a nephew of gangster Manjeet Mahal, in northwest Delhi’s Bawana. Deepak was shot dead in front of his daughter, who was also injured in the attack.
Acting on a tip-off, police teams laid a trap near the Munak Canal. “The duo was warned to surrender but instead opened fire. Police retaliated, firing four rounds and eventually overpowering them. Both were shot in the legs and arrested,” said a senior Crime Branch officer.
During the brief but violent encounter, the accused fired five rounds at the police team. Fortunately, no police personnel were injured in the exchange.
Investigators said Sombir was the one who pulled the trigger in the Bawana attack, while Vijay, a known history-sheeter, helped with shelter and logistics for the gang.
