Since January 1, there has been a significant surge of almost 149 per cent in prosecutions linked to mobile phone usage while driving in Delhi compared to the same period last year, according to traffic police data.

The statistics, released by the Delhi Traffic Police, reveal a notable increase in violations of laws regarding mobile phone usage while driving.

Between January 1 and April 15, a total of 15,846 motorists were cited for this offense, a substantial rise from the 6,369 cases reported in 2023.

“In recent months, there has been a troubling increase in the use of mobile phones while driving, which has prompted us to take stringent measures to ensure the safety of all road users,”a senior traffic police officer said.

The Delhi Traffic Police has conducted a comprehensive analysis of the top ten traffic circles, including Defence Colony, Punjabi Bagh, Karol Bagh, and Safdarjung Enclave, where the highest number of citations were issued in 2024.

The traffic police are actively involved in public awareness campaigns to educate motorists about the hazards of using mobile phones while driving.

“We urge all members of the public to prioritize road safety by refraining from using mobile phones while driving,” the officer emphasised. (With inputs from PTI)
