Delhi: Three people were killed in the Alipur area after the driver of a speeding goods tempo allegedly dozed off and rammed into a flyover pillar, an official said on Saturday. The impact left the vehicle heavily damaged, trapping the occupants inside the cabin.

Police said the accident took place near the Bakoli bus stand in the outer north of Delhi’s Alipur, when the vehicle was travelling towards Mukarba Chowk.

The deceased were identified as Jagdish Singh (50), Yashwant Singh (27), a resident of Nathupura, and Sumit (27), police said, adding that all three were residents of Delhi.

According to police, a PCR call about the accident was received around 4:30 am on Thursday, following which teams from Alipur police station rushed to the spot.

Police said rescue personnel used hydraulic equipment to cut open the mangled cabin and remove the two occupants trapped inside. Another injured man had already been shifted by ambulance to Satyawadi Raja Harish Chandra Hospital in Narela, police said.

The injured were taken to the hospital, where doctors declared all three brought dead, police said. Their bodies were later sent for a postmortem.

Initial investigation suggests that the driver may have dozed off, leading to the crash. Police said further investigation is underway.
