The Delhi government has conducted a route rationalisation study to better understand the needs of public transport users and is now set to introduce “mohalla” buses in the city, according to Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot.

He said that the mohalla buses will operate on shorter distances, connecting important points of interest, including transport hubs such as metro stations.

The government aims to make Delhi one of the top 10 cities in the world for public transport by integrating different transport modes into a reliable, affordable, convenient, and high-frequency multi-modal transport system, he added.

Gahlot said that the scheme will deploy small and medium-sized electric buses on designated routes, covering all neighbourhoods and localities, including poorly-connected residential and commercial hubs.

He said that the initiative is aimed at providing affordable and convenient public transport services to the residents of all localities, especially those living on the city outskirts.

The scheme was announced earlier this year and aims to deploy a total of 2,180 such buses by 2025, he added. (With inputs from PTI)
